Air pollution is the introduction
of chemicals, particulate matter, or biological materials that cause harm or
discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or cause damage to the natural
environment or built environment, into the atmosphere. The atmosphere is a
complex dynamic natural gaseous system that is essential to support life on
planet Earth. Stratospheric ozone depletion due to air pollution has long been
recognized as a threat to human health as well as to the Earth's ecosystems.
Indoor air pollution and urban air quality are listed as two of the world's
worst pollution problems in the 2008 Blacksmith Institute World's Worst
Polluted Places report.

Smog
Indoor pollution
Reegle definition:
Indoor pollution is often caused by
cooking over open fires and affects the health of women and children most.
Photochemical smog
Reegle definition:
In the 1950s a new type of smog,
known as photochemical smog, was first described. The compound when sunlight
hits various pollutants in the air and forms a mix of inimical chemicals that
can be very dangerous. A photochemical smog is the chemical reaction of
sunlight, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the
atmosphere, which leaves airborne particles (called particulate matter) and
ground-level ozone.
pollution
Wikipedia definition:
Pollution is the introduction of
contaminants into a natural environment that causes instability, disorder, harm
or discomfort to the ecosystem i.e. physical systems or living organisms.
Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy, such as noise,
heat, or light. Pollutants, the elements of pollution, can be foreign
substances or energies, or naturally occurring; when naturally occurring, they
are considered contaminants when they exceed natural levels. Pollution is often
classed as point source or nonpoint source pollution. The Blacksmith Institute
issues an annual list of the world's worst polluted places. In the 2007 issues
the ten top nominees are located in Azerbaijan, China, India, Peru, Russia,
Ukraine, and Zambia.
smog
Wikipedia definition:
Smog is a type of air pollution;
the word "smog" is a portmanteau of smoke and fog. Modern smog is a
type of air pollution derived from vehicular emission from internal combustion
engines and industrial fumes that react in the atmosphere with sunlight to form
secondary pollutants that also combine with the primary emissions to form
photochemical smog. Smog is also caused by large amounts of coal burning in an
area caused by a mixture of smoke, sulfur dioxide and other components.
