Protect
your health during hazy summer days
WATERLOOREGION — Hot, hazy
weather has settled in the region and people are urged to protect their health
during heat and smog alerts.
Daytime
highs are expected to hover around the high 20s and even beyond 30 C for most
days this week and high humidity will make it feel even hotter.
Region of
Waterloo Public Health reminds people to be safe while being active and enjoying
the outdoors in the summer, especially those at greater risk of health problems
due to extreme heat, humidity and smog.
People at
higher risk include seniors, infants and young children, people with chronic
heart or lung conditions such as asthma and angina, people with chronic
disabilities, people on certain medications who should consult with a
pharmacist or doctor about activity, those exercising vigorously outdoors, and
those who work outdoors. Pets are also susceptible to health problems associated
with extreme heat.
Public
Health offers these tips for avoiding heat-related illness: stay out of the hotsun and heat; limit activity to morning and evening; avoid strenuous outdoor
physical activity; go to air-conditioned sites such as malls; take periodic
cool baths or showers; drink lots of water and avoid drinks high in sugar,
caffeine or alcohol that increase the body’s water loss; wear loose-fitting
clothing that allows for sweat evaporation; check on friends and neighbours at
risk; never leave children or pets unattended in a car.
During
humidex and smog alerts, people should reschedule activities or take activities
indoors in an air-conditioned area.
