Places around Kanyakumari
Colachel beach, about 30 km from Kanyakumari, is a nice sandy beach and thick palm groves fringing the beach. Colachel has an interesting history as it was witness to the Battle of Colachel that was fought in August, 1741. The battle was fought between Maharaja Marthanda Varma’s army and European forces of Dutch East India Company.
Kumarakovil, located about 34 kms from Kanyakumari, is known for Lord Muruga Temple that is built on a hillock about 200 feet high among a lush green surrounding. The temple is known for its architectural beauty and scenic surroundings with a big lake next to the temple with boating facilities.
The Olakkay Aruvi waterfall in the Western Ghats is about 33 kms from Kanyakumari. The Waterfalls and its beautiful and scenic surroundings constitute a nice picnic spot for the tourists. The place also has a small temple connected with the sage Agasthiar near the falls that attracts a large number of pilgrims.
