Stopping accidents in the home: the ten tips,
- Don't clear the rims of glasses with bare hands.
Instead of using your bare hands to wipe the rims of glasses clean, use a pad or thick cloth.
- Close cupboard doors.
How easy is it to walk into an open cupboard door in the kitchen, especially the ones above the bench top or sink? Sadly, walking into them can cause damage to faces and eyes especially if you hit a sharp corner. Sliding or roller doors are an alternative.
- Always have the lights on.
Do not walk around your house in the dark.
- Use plastic.
I have heard so many, many stories from other people who have cut their hands badly on glass. Why? Because they are stored in a cupboard I have to reach up to. Dropping glass from that height could be disastrous.
- Wear shoes, outside and in.
I feel fantastic with bare feet. In the past I've walked inside and out minus my shoes. Nowadays I have a "no bare feet outside" rule.
- Avoid using inappropriate sharp implements.
It's so easy to grab the nearest implement to help you with a job. Ever tried to pick open a staple with a pair of scissors or a sharp knife? It can rebound and end up in your hands. Use the staple remover, it's usually much safer.
- Add cold and hot water together.
If you have solar hot water heating, or an especially good hot water heater, do not switch on the hot tap on its own. Add cold and hot together until you can assess how hot the hot water is. Sometimes it's so hot, you can scald yourself. Stay safe.
- Stand at the side of the shower.
When you are running the water for the shower stand at the side, until it is the right temperature. I know you can get cold doing that but it's probably safer.
- Keep a steady pace.
I used to rush everywhere. Now I know that's how accidents can happen. Pace yourself so you're not late, then there will be no need to rush. If you are late know that rushing doesn't mean you'll get there sooner, because you're more likely to have an accident. This applies to driving the car too.
- Have smoke alarms fitted.
Have a smoke alarm in every room. Have them especially in the kitchen and anywhere that people smoke, have a fire or light candles. People have died in house fires in our suburb because they left candles unattended. Avoid doing that.
