Ambasamudram City History-Importance-Origin-Architecture

Historical records say that the region was ruled by the Pandyan kings, who were the most prominent rulers during the late 17th century AD. Inscriptions at the Papanasam temple show the grandeur of Pandyas. Earlier before some thousands of years; a great saint called Agastiyar Munivar, who had done valuable contributions to the Tamil language, stayed in this place. Till 1891 AD, Vaikakulam was the capital of Tirunelveli district which was considered to be the prominent place by the Pandyas. Later, the capital was changed to Ambasamudram.

Some geologists say that the Pothigai hills were formed much earlier than Himalayas. Another legend says that when all the saints got together at Himalayas to attend the marriage ceremony of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi, the earth was losing its balance. On the order of Lord Shiva, Agastiyar Maha Munivar came to the Pothigai hills and meditated there to fix the imbalance. Appeased Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvathi appeared for him and blessed him. The place became popular as Kalyana Theertham, where a perennial waterfall jumps down from a 300 feet height peak. The place where Agastiyar Maha Munivar dropped a lotus is believed to be the origin of the holy river Tambaraparani (Tamirabarani). It jumps down from the Agastiyar Peak at a height of 6132 feet from the sea level.
